Nail down installation
Nail-down installation uses ring-shank or spiral nails to permanently attach hardwood planks to the wood subfloor. This is the traditional method for solid hardwood flooring and provides excellent durability and stability. The rigid connection between the boards and subfloor creates a floor that feels solid underfoot with minimal movement or creaking.
Materials Needed
- • Ring-shank or spiral nails

Resources
Things to keep in mind:
- • Test moisture levels thoroughly on both subfloor and wood materials before installation begins.
- • Use only quality ring-shank or spiral nails specifically designed for hardwood flooring applications.
- • Proper nail spacing is essential to ensure secure attachment. Follow manufacturer recommendations precisely.
- • Drive nails at the correct angle through the tongue of each board for strength and hidden appearance.
- • Allow acclimation time of 48-72 hours before installation to minimize gaps and buckling.
- • Maintain proper expansion gaps around the perimeter for natural wood movement in all seasons.
- • Professional installation is highly recommended as improper nailing can cause floor failure.
- • Site finishing on-site sanding and staining may be required, adding to installation time.
- • Cannot be used over concrete. Nail down requires a wood subfloor only.
